FAQ

Does it support multiclassing?

Yes. Pick "Auto" to let the generator decide (it favours 2-class builds), or force 1, 2, or 3 classes. Multiclass prerequisites are enforced — if your rolled stats don't qualify, the build falls back gracefully. Spell slots are pooled correctly via the PHB multiclass caster table; Warlock pact magic stays separate.

Which edition does it use — 2014 or 2024?

Both. Toggle between 2024 (current) and 2014 (legacy). Each edition uses its own rules: 2014 species grant ability score bonuses; 2024 backgrounds grant the bonuses and an Origin Feat. The toggle persists in the URL so you can share builds tagged to either edition.

What levels are supported?

Any level from 1 to 20. The generator applies ASIs at the correct levels (4/8/12/16/19, plus Fighter's extra at 6 and 14, and Rogue's at 10), unlocks subclass features at the correct class level, and computes spell slots and known/prepared spells appropriate to your level.

Is it really free? What's the catch?

Generation is unlimited, no signup required, no rate limit. We make money on LorePanic's paid plans (campaign management, AI session tools, document search) — this tool exists to introduce you to LorePanic. You can save characters to a campaign or generate AI backstories with a free account.

Where does the content come from?

Wizards of the Coast's SRD 5.1 (2014, CC-BY 4.0) and SRD 5.2 (2024, CC-BY 4.0). That means 9 species, 12 classes (one subclass each), and the SRD spell list per edition. The full PHB has more options — those are not licensed for free reuse.

Can I lock fields and reroll the rest?

Yes. Click the lock icon next to species, class, background, or ability scores to keep that field stable while rerolling everything else. Useful when you almost like a character but want to swap one piece.

How are ability scores assigned?

Choose your method: 4d6 drop lowest (default), standard array (15/14/13/12/10/8 randomly assigned), random point-buy (27-point budget), or 3d6 straight (old-school). The highest rolls go to your class's primary abilities; ASIs are spent on those primaries up to the level-20 cap.

Does the share link reproduce the exact same character?

Yes. The share button copies a URL containing the seed plus your edition/level/multiclass settings. Anyone opening that link gets the identical build. The generator is fully deterministic given those inputs.
