Connect your model account
LorePanic is free and open source. Searching rules, notes and campaigns costs us almost nothing to run. Writing answers and recaps does, so the heavy lifting runs on a model account you connect: an OpenRouter key, or your ChatGPT subscription.
Why connect an account?
Every LorePanic account can use a small shared allowance on the default model. That allowance is split between everyone, every day, so it runs out. When it does, you will see a message pointing here, and it comes back the next day (UTC).
If you want answers, recaps and conversions without watching that allowance, connect your own account. You then pay your provider directly for what you use, at their rates. LorePanic adds nothing on top. Image generation (scene art, portraits) only works with your own account.
Connect OpenRouter
OpenRouter gives you one key for many models, billed by usage. A few dollars of credit on their side goes a long way for a weekly campaign.
- Sign in to LorePanic (or create an account).
- In your OpenRouter key settings, create a key. Give it a spending limit you are comfortable with.
- Open Profile, paste the key (it starts with
sk-or-) and click Connect OpenRouter. - LorePanic checks the key once with OpenRouter, then shows Connected with the last characters of the key.
Connect ChatGPT
Already paying for ChatGPT Plus or Pro? LorePanic can run on that subscription through OpenAI's device-code sign-in, the same flow the Codex CLI uses. We never see your password. We only hold short-lived access tokens, encrypted at rest.
- Open Profile and click Connect ChatGPT.
-
A modal shows an 8-character code and a link to
auth.openai.com/codex/device. Open the link, sign in to your ChatGPT account if needed, paste the code, and approve. - The modal flips to Connected within a few seconds. Nothing else to switch on.
What runs on your account
- Campaign chat. Rules and lore answers, with the page shown next to them.
- Session recaps. Notes and summaries written from your recorded sessions.
- The converter. Rewriting adventures from one edition to another.
- Images. Only on your own account, never on the shared allowance.
Searching your books and notes, browsing the bestiary and reading your campaign do not use a model and stay free either way.
Limits & caveats
- Your provider's limits apply. OpenRouter stops when your credit or key limit runs out. OpenAI applies per-account rate limits to ChatGPT Plus and Pro. When you hit one, LorePanic shows the error until it resets.
- ChatGPT uses a fixed model. The Codex endpoint only accepts a small set of OpenAI models, so the model picker is limited while ChatGPT is connected.
- ChatGPT is a grey area. This uses OpenAI's sign-in flow in a way their public docs don't explicitly bless for third-party tools. OpenAI could change that at any time. If they do, we will disable the ChatGPT option and you can switch to OpenRouter.
Disconnect
From Profile, click Remove key (OpenRouter) or Disconnect (ChatGPT). LorePanic deletes the stored key or tokens and goes back to the shared allowance. You can also revoke the key on OpenRouter's side at any time.
FAQ
Is LorePanic free?
Yes. There are no plans and nothing to buy. The only costs are the ones you choose to pay your own model provider.
Does LorePanic see my ChatGPT conversations?
No. Your ChatGPT chats are entirely separate from LorePanic. We only use the access token to make calls for your LorePanic activity.
Do I need ChatGPT Plus, or will the free ChatGPT tier work?
You need Plus or Pro for the ChatGPT option. Without it, use an OpenRouter key.
Can my players use my account?
No. The connection is tied to your LorePanic account. Players who want their own answers connect their own account, or use the shared allowance.
Is my data any less private with my own account?
Your prompts go to a model provider either way. With your own account they go to the provider you picked, under that provider's terms. See the privacy policy.
